Synod releases final reports on selection of bishops, emerging issues

The final reports of Study Groups No. 7 and 9 reaffirm that discernment lies at the heart of selecting a bishop, while adopting specific theological criteria to discern how to address the most difficult questions facing the church, according to Cardinal Mario Grech, secretary general of the General Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops.

They often wear many hats, such as pastor, administrator, maintenance man, cook, accountant, friend. They have served mostly as parish priests, and some have also served as teachers, chaplains and counselors. Chicago Catholic congratulates and thanks them.

On this page, we recognize the deacons ordained for the Archdiocese of Chicago celebrating jubilees this year. Deacons assist the bishop and priests in ministries of the word, liturgy and charity. I “knew” the answer, which means that I knew the theology of baptism, captured succinctly in the Catechism of the Catholic Church: “Born with a fallen human nature and tainted by original sin, children also have need of the new birth in baptism to be freed from the power of darkness. … The Church and the parents would deny a child the priceless grace of becoming a child of God were they not to confer baptism shortly after birth” (CCC 1250).
