International Affairs Budget:

The Congress approved the FY2010 budget resolution. It included $47.9 billion for international affairs. While this amount is $3.9 billion less than President Obama originally requested, which we supported, it represents a 17% increase over the $40.9 billion enacted for FY2009. The Congress will soon consider a supplemental request from the President for $7.1 billion for international affairs, which would be available for the rest of FY09 (ending on September 30) and FY2010. Key parts of the international affairs funding would confront global poverty by supporting the provision of food and clean water to poor persons; treatment of people affected by HIV and other deadly diseases; promotion of agriculture and microfinance to help poor persons support themselves and their families; and delivery of education and health services to poor people.

JPHD is pleased to announce two youth-focused initiatives to assist you in sharing Catholic social teaching with your audiences.
1) 2010 CCHD Multi-Media Youth Arts Contest
This contest is a tool for schools and parishes to engage youth in grades 7-12 in learning about the causes of poverty, Catholic social teaching, the two feet of social action, and the work and witness of groups funded by the Catholic Campaign for Human Development.  All art forms are welcome, such as YouTube videos, music, painting, drama, writing, PowerPoint slideshows, etc.  Several dozen pages of new lesson plans and activities for use with this contest are posted on the contest website. 2) Cardinal Bernardin New Leadership Award
This annual award is given to a Catholic young adult engaged in efforts to address the root causes of poverty and injustice in the United States.  The award is presented at a reception at the November meeting of the bishops of the United States.  Please consider nominating a young Catholic between the ages of 18-30.  The deadline for nominations is July 31, 2009.  The brochure and nomination form are available at http://www.usccb.org/cchd/youth.shtml#cardinal
